Anayama Daisuke | Black Pottery Ko-Daruma 黒陶ノ達磨
L10cm x W9cm x H11cm
This ko daruma is created through a unique carbon-rich firing process, where the piece is buried within a cylindrical chamber filled with rice husks. As the husks burn, dense carbon penetrates the clay body, producing a deep black surface with a quiet, luminous depth. The surface is meticulously polished by hand using metal tools, refining the texture into a smooth, tactile finish with subtle sheen.
Rooted in the philosophy of “Fueki Ryūkō” - the coexistence of timelessness and change ; this work merges the enduring daruma form with contemporary material expression.
The profound black surface holds stillness, strength, and quiet intensity, allowing tradition and modern sensibility to coexist within a single form. Through careful finishing and layered firing, the work expresses a sense of permanence that continues to evolve with time and touch.
Minor variations in surface tone, polish marks, and depth are natural results of the firing and hand-finishing process, making each piece subtly unique.

Each piece is made slowly by hand, and small variations in colour, surface texture, form, and natural markings are part of the material’s expression and individuality.
