Anayama Daisuke | Ko-Daruma Wrapped in Scenery 景色ヲ纏ウ達磨
L10cm x W9cm x H11cm
This ko daruma is crafted from a stone-rich, groggy clay body, built up slowly by hand to create a layered, mineral surface.
Embedded with small stones and coarse particles, the texture evokes the tactile landscapes of riverbeds and mountain paths carrying a grounded, earthy presence that invites close viewing and quiet contemplation.
Raised amidst mountains and rivers, Anayama-san draws deeply from the landscapes of his childhood. In Japanese ceramics, the atmosphere contained within a vessel is often described as “scenery” - not simply what is seen on the surface, but the air, depth, and emotional landscape a piece holds.
In this work, the figurative form of the Daruma is gently wrapped in these remembered terrains. Each grain of clay and stone is layered to evoke a sense of natural accumulation, allowing the viewer to feel a landscape extending beyond the physical form itself.
Variations in stone distribution, texture, colour tone, and surface depth are inherent to the handmade process. These natural differences form part of each piece’s unique scenery and character.
