Anayama Daisuke | Brush Stroke Ko-Daruma 刷毛目ノ達磨
L10cm x W9cm x H11cm
This ko daruma is finished using a traditional Japanese hakeme technique, where white slip is brushed onto the surface using bundled straw brushes. The sweeping strokes create rhythmic, swirling patterns, allowing moments of spontaneity and movement to emerge naturally across the form, and gives the piece balanced visual dynamism with a calm, grounded presence.
The contrast between the soft white slip and the darker clay body introduces depth and quiet tension, echoing natural rhythms such as flowing wind and water.
While the brush marks convey motion, the stable daruma form anchors the composition in stillness. This interplay reflects Anayama-san’s ongoing exploration of how traditional techniques can be translated into contemporary sculptural forms, bridging familiarity with new expression.
Subtle variations in brush marks, slip thickness, surface tone, and form are natural outcomes of the handmade process and contribute to each piece’s individuality.
